He was a prolific and well-known illustrator of glamorous postcards, some worth collecting,
some downright trashy. Much of "his" work was done by exploited helpers and this also explains the incredible
abundance of his production and the resulting stylistic instability.
Little is known about the life of Xavier Sager. Resident in Paris, he always liked to show off, to frequent
the big world, the trendy haunts and places, especially on the Côte d'Azur. There are those who indicate him
of French or Belgian origin, others Austrian or American, born in 1880 or 1881, and suddenly disappeared after
the Second World War, perhaps emigrated to the United States or Casablanca. From the judicial, tabloid and
pink news reports of the time we have obtained some information which, however, does not completely eliminate
the doubts about his biography.
Fu un prolifico e noto illustratore di cartoline glamour, alcune degne di essere
collezionate, altre decisamente trash. Gran parte del “suo” lavoro era svolto da aiutanti sfruttati e questo
spiega anche l’incredibile abbondanza della sua produzione e della conseguente instabilità stilistica.
Della vita di Xavier Sager si sa poco e confusamente. Residente a Parigi, gli piaceva
mettersi sempre in mostra, frequentare il gran mondo, i ritrovi e le località alla moda specialmente della
Costa Azzurra. C’è chi lo indica di origine francese oppure belga, altri austriaco o americano, nato nel 1880
oppure 1881, e scomparso improvvisamente dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, forse emigrato negli Stati Uniti o a
Casablanca. Dalle cronache giudiziarie, scandalistiche e rosa dell’epoca abbiamo ricavato alcune notizie che
tuttavia non eliminano completamente i dubbi sulla sua biografia.
On 10 March 1906 Sager was arrested in Toulon (France), a splendid city in Provence, nestled between sea and mountains with its tourist attractions for all seasons, also equipped with a military port. The charge against Sager was of concurrence in military espionage. Almost all the French newspapers reported the news of the arrest of Jeanne Renée, a charming demi-mundane, accused of an attack on national security, assisted by the Venetian lover Alberto Bretty, an entrepreneur in the postcards sector, and by the latter's friend "le dessinateur américain Xavier Sager, 25 ans, de Salt lake-City" [American cartoonist Xavier Sager, 25, from Salt lake-City].
After a night in the Toulon prison, Sager was found innocent and released along with his Venetian friend. But the trial continued for the beautiful Renée who, acquitted of the crime of military espionage, was sentenced to a few months for participating in a small opium trade. Sager didn't let the hype aroused by this scandal escape to show off, selling his trial sketches to the newspapers.

Il 10 marzo 1906 Sager fu arrestato a Toulon (Tolone, Francia), splendida città della Provenza, incastonata fra mare e montagna con relative attrazioni turistiche per tutte le stagioni, dotata anche di un porto militare. L’accusa contro Sager era di concorso in spionaggio militare. Quasi tutti i giornali francesi riportarono la notizia dell’arresto di Jeanne Renée, affascinante demi-mondane, imputata di attentato alla sicurezza nazionale, coadiuvata dall’amante veneziano Alberto Bretty, imprenditore nel settore delle cartoline, e dall’amico di quest’ultimo "le dessinateur américain Xavier Sager, 25 ans, de Salt lake-City". Dopo una notte nel carcere di Toulon, Sager fu riconosciuto innocente e rilasciato insieme all’amico veneziano. Ma il processo continuò per la bella Renée che, assolta dal reato di spionaggio militare, fu condannata a pochi mesi per concorso in un piccolo traffico di oppio. Sager non si lasciò sfuggire il clamore suscitato da questo scandalo per mettersi in mostra, vendendo ai giornali i suoi schizzi relativi al processo.

The 6 postcards of the Leda series signed Sager have evident similarities with the series
by Kirchner (K.8-2 + 5 + 3 + 7 + 4 + 6).
Sager's drawing of the woman loved by Zeus is identical to that of Kirchner, but the swan varies. The captions
that complete the figures are taken from Poésies fugitives (1787) by Évariste de Parny, a French poet
(1753-1814).
