Charles Bruce Bairnsfather (1887-1969) was born in Murree, British India (now Pakistan) of British parents. At the outbreak of World War I he joined the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Having sustained severe hearing damage during a battle, he was released from active duty and assigned to collaborate on The Bystander, a weekly publication for the military at war. Captain Bairnsfather designed the series “Fragments from France” entrusting the characters of him Old Bill, Bert and Alf with the narration of the trench life in a humorous version, his cartoons were very successful.

Fragments from France
Charles Bruce Bairnsfather (1887-1969), nacque a Murree, nell’India britannica (ora Pakistan) da genitori britannici. Allo scoppio della prima guerra mondiale si arruolò al Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Avendo riportato gravi danni all’udito durante una battaglia, fu esonerato dal servizio attivo e incaricato di collaborare a The Bystander, una pubblicazione settimanale per i militari in guerra. Il capitano Bairnsfather disegnò la serie “Fragments from France” affidando ai suoi personaggi Old Bill, Bert and Alf la narrazione della vita di trincea in versione umoristica, e le sue vignette riscossero molto successo.
In our book we have already mentioned Bruce Bairnsfather for the use in "Fragments from France" of the same image of La Vie Parisienne. It is clearly a tribute and testimony to the great popularity of Raphael Kirchner, whose postcards and prints hung in the trenches mitigated the horrors of the First World War.

Many of these prints were from French and English publications, such as La Vie Parisienne,
Fantasio and The Sketch of which Kirchner
became the star attraction, but his delightful creations quickly spread to other allied countries as well.
With good reason we must pay Kirchner the title of “Father of the Pin-ups”.
